The White Lotus Effect: How HBO’s Hit Show Drives Luxury Travel Booms

HBO’s The White Lotus has become more than just a critically acclaimed TV series—it’s a powerful driver of luxury travel trends. Each season, the show’s stunning filming locations captivate audiences, fueling a surge in tourism and bookings at high-end resorts. From Hawaii to Italy and now Thailand, The White Lotus Effect is reshaping travel demand, proving that cinematic storytelling can be a major force in global tourism.

From Hawaii to Sicily: A Proven Travel Phenomenon

The impact of The White Lotus on luxury travel first became evident with its debut season, filmed at the Four Seasons Resort Maui. According to the The New York Times, following the show’s release, Four Seasons saw a 10x increase in demand for its properties in both Maui and Sicily, where Seasons 1 and 2 were filmed. The ripple effect continued into Season 2, set at the San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel in Taormina, Italy. According to CNN, Hotels.com, the hotel experienced a staggering 300% increase in searches after the season aired. Luxury travel companies also felt the impact. Virtuoso, a high-end travel network, reported a 424% spike in sales to Sicily following Season 2 (The New York Times). Similarly, Black Tomato, a bespoke travel agency, saw its Sicily bookings triple in 2023, as confirmed by cofounder Tom Marchant (Robb Report). Demand for the Taormina Four Seasons remains insatiable—Robb Report noted that reservation requests have "literally never stopped" and that "you still can’t get into the Four Seasons in Taormina—it’s completely chockablock."

Season 3: The White Lotus Sparks a Koh Samui Travel Boom

As anticipation builds for Season 3, set in Thailand, the White Lotus Effect is already taking shape. Koh Samui, the main filming location, is experiencing a dramatic surge in interest. According to Globetrender, searches for Koh Samui vacations soared 88% ahead of the show’s February 16 premiere. Meanwhile, Forbes reports that Vrbo, a major home-rental platform, has seen a 115% year-over-year increase in searches for vacation rentals in Koh Samui.

With The White Lotus showcasing Thailand’s tropical beauty and opulent resorts, travel experts predict a continued boom in luxury bookings. As seen in previous seasons, the allure of the show’s settings has a proven track record of transforming destinations into must-visit locations for high-end travelers.

A Marketing Goldmine for Luxury Real Estate & Hospitality

The White Lotus Effect extends beyond hotel bookings—it also creates a halo effect for high-end real estate. Investors can capitalize on the show’s influence, using Bel Roc's proximity to The White Lotus as a selling point for renting exclusive properties.

With the spotlight now on Koh Samui, an increased interest from both travelers and investors can be expected. The show’s ability to shape global travel trends highlights the growing intersection between entertainment, hospitality, and luxury real estate—turning fictional vacations into real-world demand.
